As a new migrant in the city, this page contains all the information you will need to ensure you know where all the key services are that you will use.

Information on how to claim asylum:

If you have come to the UK and you need to stay because you would be in danger in your country of origin or residence, and you want the UK to grant you international protection, you need to claim asylum. You claim asylum via the UK Home Office.

The Right to Remain Toolkit explains how you can claim asylum in the UK and the different stages of the process involved.

What to expect at the UK Border (arriving on a visa)

As part of your preparations for living in the UK the Border Force want to make sure you have everything you need to get through the UK border as quickly and smoothly as possible.

When you arrive at passport control, you should expect Border Force officers to ask you simple questions about your studies or your stay in the UK.

Additionally when you arrive at the UK border control, make sure you:

-Have your passport ready and remove it from any cover.

-Have completed a landing card (if a non EEA National).

Keep any medical documentation, recent bank statement and details of where you are staying in your hand luggage, as they may ask to see this information.

Do not give false or misleading information (including forged or counterfeit documents).

Have this documentation ready in your hand luggage (do not place these documents in the airplane luggage hold).

There are restrictions on what you can bring into the UK:

This includes certain foods, plants, alcohol, tobacco, gifts and sums of money equivalent to $10,000 or more.

Do not bring in endangered plants or animals, this includes ivory, skins, hides and shells and any products made from them.

Never bring in counterfeit goods, illegal drugs, offensive weapons or indecent or obscene material. Some items are restricted and will require a license or permit.

Home Office Building:

The building pictured above is where you will go to arrange your visas, report if you are an asylum seeker and sort out any other immigration related issues.  The building is located behind Sheffield Crown court and can be seen on the map below.

The address is: Vulcan House, Riverside entrance, 6 Millsands, Sheffield S3 8NU (It is to the north of the city centre and about a 10 minute walk from the City Hall.)
