This week Carol took her Entry 1 group to visit the Nick Hedges exhibition at the Winter Gardens. Everyone had a lovely afternoon which you can see from the photos below. More are available on our Facebook page here.

On Friday 10th June students from Learn for Life were invited to visit the opening of Doc Fest in Sheffield as part of the “Door to Doc” project. We were picked up by coach and taken to the Showroom cinema where we were given complimentary gift bags and saw the documentary, “Kedi”. The documentary explored the journeys of street cats and the people in Istanbul. After the documentary we were given a tour around the Alternative Realities Exhibition at the Millennium Galleries and the Virtual Reality Arcade at the Site Gallery which were very futuristic and hands-on. We got to speak to a holocaust survivor and got to walk around Mars. There are more photos available on our Facebook page.

A small group of us went to Sheffield Cathedral to take part in BBC Radio 4’s “Any Questions?”. It was an interesting and educational evening. It was also fascinating for individuals who have previously not been allowed, or seen people, disagreeing with the government in their own country due to fear of imprisonment or worse.

On Saturday we took a coach trip of 50 students and volunteers to Scarborough. We enjoyed a picnic in the park, volleyball on the beach, a look around the town and a walk up to the castle. We looked at the boats in the harbour and paddled in the sea as well as having a dance and going on a few rides in the funfair. It was a fun day but with retrospective moments too as the sea brought back memories of people’s journeys to Europe across the mediterranean sea. They said how they enjoyed seeing the sea in a positive way now. Below are some photos from our visit and there are more available on our facebook page here.

On our trip to Grindleford we enjoyed a bit of Eritrean singing and dancing!
Thanks to the Northern Refugee Centre’s Finding Our Feet project we were able to fund a trip to the countryside for 30 students and volunteers. We took the train to Grindleford and then had an enjoyable walk to Padley Gorge. It was a fantastic day with lots of laughter, a picnic, English practice and fun. Below are some photos from the day and there are more available on our Facebook page.

Some of our drummers performed at Sharrow Festival today…

The local community in Sharrow had a Mela for Eid, at U-Mix, where we do football training. Some of us went to have a look at what was going on and to practice English conversation.

We took our ESOL Entry 1 class to have a look at Sheffield by the Seaside in the City Centre. More photos are on our facebook page.
